Morocco, which succeeded to develop within a few years a significant aeronautical background of first rank, figures currently among the countries where aeronautical subcontracting has the most promising future prospects.

By 2015, aeronautic industry in Morocco should create 17.000 employments and an additional sales turnover of about 800 million euros.

The first Aeroexpo Marrakech, held on 2008 under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, under the aegis of the Ministry of Equipment and Transport and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and New Technologies, with the effective support of the Royal Air Forces, the National Office of Airports, the Royal Air Maroc, the Group of Moroccan Aerospace industrials (GIMAS) and inaugurated by H.E. the Prime Minister, was undoubtedly a great success and earned its mantle as the key aeronautic event in the year with world-wide news coverage !

The wide spectrum of business achieved during this first edition highlights the significant growth of the Moroccan aeronautic industry in recent years and the choice of this country to host this event.

The aeronautic industry in Morocco is a promising asset for the Moroccan economy. Its identification as such led to the creation of an industrial area “Nouasseur Aero pole” which currently lodges 15 companies operating in different aeronautic activities. This Aero pole will have to gear down the outputs of this activity in terms of added value and generation of new jobs.

Having a high potential for the aeronautic industry and the adequate environment to host a larger number of aeronautics companies , Morocco represents an ideal market for the aviation industry, especially sub-contracting which has highly developed within the last few years.

Aeroexpo Marrakech is Morocco's showcase meeting for civil & military aviation, technology and services that will attract exhibitors, delegations & trade visitors from around the world, and will be focusing on creating opportunities for the attendees to interact and meet new buyers & partners.

Websit: AeroExpo-Morocco

Zodiac Aerospace Maroc is investing 135 million dirhams towards a new aeronautical project in Aïn Johra, confirming Morocco's advances in attracting investors and promoting the aeronautical sector.

Amidst fears of a slowing global economy, Morocco's burgeoning aeronautics industry continues to attract foreign investment. The ministries of new technologies and finance signed a deal on Monday (January 26th) in Rabat with Zodiac Aerospace Maroc to begin research and production of aeronautical equipment at the Aïn Johra industrial park, for an investment of around 135 million dirhams.
Minister of Trade, Industry and New Technologies Ahmed Reda Chami said that this latest agreement confirms Morocco's calling to be a platform for investment in aeronautical trades. The Minister added that this agreement will allow the creation of 250 direct jobs, a large number of which will be engineering posts.

"A strong presence in national engineering through this great project shows that Morocco has taken another step in the field of aeronautics, which will not stop simply at construction, but will also include engineering and design."
In the past few years, the sector has seen considerable development, growing from near-zero in 2000 to a 250 million dollar industry employing 7,000 people. Seven major areas employ about 75% of those currently working in the sector: cabling, middle management, composites, mechatronics, sheet metals, fitting and machining.

"The rapid development in the sector has been carried forward by benchmark operators in the sector, such as EADS, Boeing and SAFRAN, who have given Morocco credibility as a destination," said Chami.
A number of companies in Morocco are suppliers to European and American-based companies placing orders. Morocco is among those countries where subcontracting has a promising future.

The aeronautical sector is characterised by a strong French presence.
The chairman of the French Union of Metallurgical Trades and Industries, Frédéric Saint-Geoure, said that Morocco's economic and industrial development strategy to support high added-value industrial sectors, such as aeronautics, can only encourage French companies to open other nearby markets.
"The strength of the Moroccan aeronautical sector lies in that it has developed as a network where customers and suppliers are right next door to each other," said Thomas Corbel, manufacturer of aircraft engine components for the Airbus A320 and A340. "With geographical proximity restricting logistical costs, aeronautics subcontractors in Morocco have what they need to deal with the downward pressure on costs."

Chairman of the Moroccan Space and Aeronautical Industries Group (GIMAS) Hamid Benbrahim El Andaloussi is delighted with the development of the sector, feeling that it could not be more competitive. "Morocco has very quickly realised the potential of the fledgling industry that is aeronautics, identifying it as a top-priority strategic sector in its Emergence plan. Training is one of the keys to success in our development strategy for this sector."
The aeronautics sector in Morocco, which is made up of about 50 companies employing more than 2,000 workers, intends to triple its turnover to one billion euros by 2012, authoritative sources told PANA here.
The turnover had reached 300 million euros in 2003, due to the establishment of foreign companies, indicated Aeronautical Morocco in a statement transmitted to PANA on Wednesday.
The document specified that the sector also intended to double the number of jobs in the next four years.

The globalization and growth of the aeronautic and space industry support the emergence of manufacturing centers in diverse locations. Morocco expects to double its current value of products by 2010 from 2006 levels.

Potential and Advantages

The major success of the aviation industry (Aeropole in Casablanca called the “Aeronautic City” and Tangiers Free Zone [TFZ], at Casablanca Nouacer) is based on four conditions: competitively priced qualified labor, the availability of qualified subcontractors, close proximity of factories and suppliers, and availability of local investment capital.
The growth of the aeronautics industry relies on a highly professional and qualified supply chain of local subcontractors who have achieved certifications from international organizations.

Structure of the market

Some aircraft parts companies in Morocco:

- Studies and surveys: Teuchos, Mechanics and tooling : SERMP, Creuzet, Atlas Production, Dion Composites: EADS Maroc Aviation, ASI, Aircelle, DL Aerotechnologie, MS Composite Assembly: EADS Maroc Aviation, ASI, Aircelle, DL Aérotecnologie, Distribution of chemical products : Gaches Chimie
- Surface treatment: Sefcam Wiring and connection: EADS Maroc Aviation, Souriau, Matis, Labinal Sheet metal and boiler making : Sefcam, Indraéro, Electricity and electronics: Matis, OB Electronique, Crouzet,

- Microspire Maintenance of civil aircraft: Royal Air Maroc, Aérotechnique Industrie Maintenance of military aircrafts and helicopter : EADS Maroc Aviation, the FRA specialised workshops Engine maintenance : SMES Aeronautic training: Casa Aéro, RAM, FRA (pilotes), AIMA- Mohamed VI

- International Academy of Civil Aviation (aeronautics engineers, and electronic technicians), ONDA ( on / off ground technicians , aeronautics controllers)

General Advantages: Government support

The Moroccan government, through the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Economic Upgrading, is strongly involved in the development of automobile and aircraft parts manufacturing (Emergence Plan). The sector is eligible for Hassan II funds, which contribute financing for land acquisition and building construction (50% of the land cost, 30% of the construction cost; this subsidy is 100% if it is claimed for the land acquisition only).

Morocco’s proactive business climate is energized by its 16 Regional Investment Centers (RICs), which serve as “one-stop shopping centers” for foreign businesses wanting to enter the Moroccan market. RICs are located in major cities throughout the country and are linked by an electronic commerce system -- called the “E-Government Cyber Network” -- to key government ministries. Trained staff at each RIC assists new businesses in the preparation of license applications and other documents. With the support of a RIC, a start-up business can be fully licensed and up and running within two days.

Various trade agreements (EU, USA, Turkey, Arab countries, others) provide a wide range of export opportunities.
